Why not aluminum?
- Aluminum units are cut and not welded. Their exposed corners oxidize and erode (especially in high salt environments) and coatings delaminate from corner cut points.
- Non-welded corners eventually leak as sealants used break down or delaminate.
- Most aluminum windows use rubber gaskets which crack in the heat of the Caribbean, inevitably leak and require periodic replacement.
- Rubber gasket windows pop out of their frames in hurricane winds.
- Aluminum fastened with dissimilar materials creates electrolysis. This in turn creates oxidation and corrosion.
- Aluminum coatings chip when damaged, exposing the aluminum structure underneath. These surfaces cannot be repaired once installed.
- Poor thermal performance as aluminum conducts much more heat than uPVC.
- Aluminum coatings fade over time with guarantees for aluminum products being a fraction of the guarantee period of uPVC products.
Why not steel?
- They are aesthetically displeasing.
- They rust quickly and require continuous maintenance.
- They do not seal well, tend to leak and perform poorly in rain.
- Very poor thermal performance.
Why uPVC?
uPVC is the predominant material used in developed markets:
- In Europe and The UK more than two-thirds of all windows and doors are uPVC.
- In North America, depending on the region, 60% to 90% of all windows and doors are uPVC.
- In Barbados it has been estimated that up to 90% of all windows are uPVC.
There is no question that uPVC is far and away the best material to use In the Caribbean:
- Welded corners cannot leak or deteriorate over time.
- No corrosion or deterioration, even under sea blast conditions.
- No painting, easy to clean, little or no maintenance, lowest life-cycle ownership cost.
- 20 year warranty.
- No rubber gaskets.
- Domus supplies a range of Economical and High-Impact Hurricane Resistant products.
- Hurricane resistance does not deteriorate over time and remains consistent for at least the 20-year warranty period.
- Very high security without burglar bars.
- Excellent thermal performance.
- Clean lines, classy, up-market and elegant.
